Volunteer Opportunities at State Parks

by Darren Smith
for About.com

There are plenty of opportunities to volunteer your time on worthwhile projects at state parks. Individual projects might include staffing information booths, conducting interpretive programs, monitoring wildlife, or even entering information into computers. Group projects can involve park and trail cleanup or building restoration. If your time is limited, you might consider working on one-time projects. If time is not an issue, then consider volunteering for a seasonal or a year-round position.

Most states offer the volunteer position of campground host, where your duties might include providing visitor information, staffing visitor centers and museums, maintenance projects and general housekeeping. At most state parks, campground hosts are provided with a campsite during their stay.

You should be aware that some of the seasonal positions may include an application deadline. For example, the deadline for applying for summer work at Alaska State Parks is April 1st.
