State Park Jobs and Career Opportunities - New Mexico

Interview with a Park Manager

By Darren Smith, About.com

Name: Tom Turnbull

Current Position: Manager of Vietnam Veterans Memorial State Park

How long have you been with New Mexico State Parks and in what capacity?
Seven and three-quarter years, from park technician (do all-know all) to manager.

How did you become interested in working as Park Manager?
I should have been a park ranger 30 years ago -- it's just too fabulous. Now as manager, its the interest in the Vietnam experience that I can identify with.

Describe a typical day at your job.
(If there is no such thing as a typical day, then please tell us about your primary responsibilities and duties.)
Now its computers, prepare major events (Veterans Day is coming) and get up go to the display area talk with visitors. Also, check the grounds for whatever one checks for.

How many hours a week do you work in this position?
Legally 40.

What aspects of your job do you enjoy the most?
I enjoy the interaction with other veterans and families.

What do you find to be the greatest challenges of your job?
Keeping an emotional balance and helping others do the same. This is a very emotional park, not your typically "let's have fun and catch fish park."

What kind of training/schooling is required in your position?
Hahaha. Sometimes I think being in the wrong place at the right time helps. Really, we are looking at educator backgrounds, planners, and multitaskers. We interact with politicians and national figures, so proper decorum is necessary

Is there any kind of training or general experience that you wish you had before taking your job?
Probably more computer training as most of our talks and educational series are all done on computers and I get by, but I see others that whiz by.

What are a few of the projects that you've been working on recently that have been the most interesting?
We are planning to develop an educational unit. Generating the monies and equipment is the big challenge. Working with the Foundation (like a friends' group) is rewarding.

If someone were interested in working in your position, what advice could you give them?
Go buy hankies and lots of them. Be prepared to be chief cook and bottle washer in charge of the facility. Be prepared to roll up your sleeves and unclog the toilet, and then wash off in time for the meeting with the Congressman coming in the door.
