Great River Road

The 2,069-mile Great River Road borders the Mississippi River through the states of Mississippi, Arkansas, Iowa, Illinois, Wisconsin, and Minnesota. The Wisconsin segment of the byway flanks the Mississippi River along the state's western border, displaying the culture and heritage of 33 river towns. Travelers can stop at the 30 or more state historical markers and archaeological sites, and also at the many local museums, which tell the stories of early Indian occupants, the French fur traders and explorers, the lead mining boom, the steamboat era, and the lumber barons. Recreational opportunities include 50 local parks and beaches, and 12 state and 3 national recreational resources.

Start and Endpoint: The northern gateway of the 249-mile Wisconsin section of the Great River Road is located at Prescott, 30 miles southeast of Saint Paul, Minnesota, via US 10 and US 61. The southern gateway is near the east end of the US 20 Mississippi River bridge in Dubuque, Iowa at the Illinois state line.
