In 2010, the Blue Ridge Parkway is being recognized and celebrated for its 75th anniversary. This celebration brings an opportunity to create awareness and take action to ensure a strong future for the Parkway. Blue Ridge Parkway 75, Inc. is providing a variety of events, culminating with a September 10-12 celebration at Cumberland Knob and the Blue Ridge Music Center.
Check out just a few of the highlighted events happening now:
August 26: Hotel Floyd Concert Series
Every Thursday (May-October) Hotel Floyd and Mitchell Music Co. will be hosting a “Live After 5 Concert Series" with bluegrass music, food, drink, and more!
August 27-28: Fines Creek Bluegrass Jam
Capitalizing on local talent, the Fines Creek Bluegrass Jam is a showcase for the musical traditions of the Appalachian Mountains.
August 28: Geneva Hall Square Dances
A traditional square dance complete with a caller, live bluegrass band, and lots of local character are just a few things visitors experience.
August 28–29: Nelson County Bike Festival
Cyclists enjoy the Parkway as a challenging and scenic route. August 30: “The Blue Ridge Parkway 75th Anniversary Celebration” Reception and Exhibition
This rotating exhibit gallery will feature through panels of pictures and text about the history of the Parkway.
September 4: Heritage Day
The Banner House Museum, Avery County’s only house museum, is a restored 1865 home that is owned and operated by the Greater Banner Elk Heritage Foundation.
September 4: 2nd Annual Founders Day Fair
The Transylvania Heritage Museum will be holding their 2nd Annual Founders Day Fair, celebrating the Founding Families of Transylvania County.
September 5: 8th Mile-High Kite Festival
The first 200 children at this family-oriented event will receive free kites to decorate and fly.
September 10-12: Parkway’s 75th Anniversary Festival
The official 75th Anniversary celebration - a multi-day, multi-venue festival staged in and around Cumberland Knob, NC, where Parkway construction began on September 11, 1935.
