How to Get to the George Washington Birthplace National Monument:

Park is located on the Potomac River, 38 miles east of Fredericksburg, Virginia; accessible via VA 3 and VA 204.

The Stratford Home Plantation, the birthplace of Robert E,. Lee, is located just off SR 3, approximately 10 miles east of the Washington Birthplace National Monument. The plantation is still managed as a farm today on 1,670 of its original acres.

The Fredericksburg & Spotsylvania National Military Park is located 50 miles south of Washington, DC, and 50 miles north of Richmond, Virginia. Park includes numerous areas on both sides of I-95 in the Fredericksburg area. Portions of four major Civil War battlefields (Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, the Wilderness, and Spotsylvania Court House), Chatham Manor (a former hospital for Union soldiers), and several smaller historic sites comprise the park.

Birthplace of the first U.S. President, this park includes a memorial mansion and gardens, and the tombs of his father, grandfather, and great-grandfather.

Things to Do at George Washington Birthplace National Monument:

The visitor center includes exhibits and a 14-minute film. Ranger programs begin on the hour from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm at the birth site. The Ranger program tours the Colonial Kitchen and concludes at the Memorial House. Tour the living colonial farm to enhance your visit. Costumed interpretation is provided seasonally when staffing permits. Bring a picnic during warm weather to enjoy at the picnic area on Popes Creek. Hike the one-mile-long nature trail at the picnic area. Walk along the Potomac River beach at the beach area (no swimming allowed). Visit the Washington family burial grounds where George Washington's father, grandfather and great-grandfather are buried.

Operating Hours:

9:00 am to 5:00 pm daily. Closed Thanksgiving Day, Christmas and New Years Day. Visitation highest in Summer. School group visit highest in April and May.
