Gettysburg National Military Park:
The Battle of Gettysburg was a turning point in the Civil War, and also happened to be the war's bloodiest battle with 51,000 casualties. It also provided President Abraham Lincoln with the setting for his most famous address. If your mom loves history, don' pass up the park. Take her on a tour with a Licensed Battlefield Guide to learn about the highlights of the battlefield and to answer any questions you may have. There's also free ranger-guided programs, evening campfire programs, activities for kids, and specialized battle walks to enjoy.
Women's Rights National Historic Park:
This is a double whammy - history and celebrating women. In 1848, the first women's rights convention was held to discuss the expanding the role of women in America. Because of this event, women have achieved greater equality with voting, property rights, and education. There are plenty of sites to see like the Elizabeth Cady Stanton House, the Wesleyan Chapel, and the M'Clintock House. Be sure to check the visitor center for tours and events.
Homestead National Monument of America:
The Homestead Act of 1862 was signed into law by Abraham Lincoln after the secession of southern states, and turned over vast amounts of the public domain to private citizens. 270 millions acres of the United States was claimed and settled under this act, helping to shape the country we now call home. The park offers opportunities for walking tours, special events, scenic trails, and prairie and woodland areas to explore. The 244-acre monument is also alive with plant and animal life rarely seen in just one place.
