Of the original two million acres of old growth redwood forest along the California coast that existed in the mid 1800's, it is estimated that 96% of it has been logged. Today the Redwood National and State Parks unit protects 45% of all remaining coastal redwood old-growth forests. The combined park area includes more than 112,600 acres, of which almost 39,000 acres is old growth forest.
