Gateway National Recreation Area was established in 1972 as the country's first urban national park in order to protect natural, historical and recreational resources in the New York-New Jersey area. This 26,607-acre park includes three units: the Jamaica Bay and Staten Island units in New York City, and the Sandy Hook unit in eastern New Jersey.
