The Gettysburg Cyclorama Center, first opened in 1962 as the park visitor center, was home of the "Gettysburg Cyclorama", the famous painting of Pickett's Charge. It was painted by French artist Paul Dominique Philippoteaux and a team of 20 artists in 1883-1884. The Cyclorama building is now closed to the public and the area will be returned to the way it appeared in July 1863 when it was the center of the Union army's battle line and more than 970 soldiers were killed, wounded or captured there.
