Before you head out on your next camping adventure, make sure you have these essential items for a fun and safe experience. Keep in mind, these are basic suggestions. Be sure to research the climate and activities you may come across in your specific destination.
Basics
- First aid kit
- Lighter (Unlike matches which don’t work if wet)
- Flashlight/headlamp (And extra batteries)
- Duct tape
- Rope
- Swiss army knife
- Folding multi-purpose tool
- Garbage bags
- Map
Toiletries
Tip: Next time you travel to a hotel or receive travel-size toiletries in the mail, save them in a box. Then you can pick out what you need when you go out camping.
- Toothpaste
- Toothbrush
- Contacts/Glasses/Solution (If you use them)
- Hair brush
- Dry shampoo
- Biodegradable soap (Great for bathing as well as dishes)
- Sunscreen
- Bug repellent
- Tweezers (You will thank me if you get a splinter)
- Aspirin
- Finger nail clippers
- Toilet paper
- Quarters (For the showers)
Gear
- Tent (Check to make sure you have all the poles and stakes before you leave)
- Ground mat
- Sleeping bag
- Extra blankets/pillows (If you are not camping in the backcountry)
- Camping lantern
- Backpacks
- Canteen/water bottles (Check out Camelbak)
- Portable camping grill
- Towels (Look for small travel towels)
Food
- Paper towels
- Cooler (If you are not camping in the backcountry)
- Pot with lid (Look for portable kits that include a few pots/pans)
- Sporks
- Can opener (Not needed if you remember that Swiss Army Knife)
- Dish cloth/towel
- Spatula or tongs
- Granola/Sports Bars (Great for hikes)
- Fruit
- Rice or pasta
- Peanut butter/Jelly
- Loaf of bread

- Hot dogs
- Basic condiments
- S’more fixings!
Tip: If you are heading into the backcountry and don’t want to fiddle with food, grab a package of kielbasa and a box of rice for a quick Jambalaya. And be sure to bring bear-proof storage containers if you have to keep food outside of a car.
