In 1910, a group of miners and prospectors known as the
Sourdough Party made the first successful climb of Mount McKinley's North Peak.
Prior to the their climb, people had believed that the North Peak was the higher
peak, but at the summit the group discovered that the South Peak was, in fact,
850 feet higher. The Sourdough Party claimed to have erected a flagpole at the
summit, but since their flag was not visible from Fairbanks, people had to take
the climbers' words as proof of their feat.
