Crater Lake National Park

Crater Lake was created by the eruption and collapse of 12,000-foot Mount Mazama, approximately 7,700 years ago. The resulting six-mile-wide "caldera" (a Spanish word for "kettle")  eventually filled with water. The lake surface lies at 6,178 feet above sea level, with the surrounding rim varying from about 7,000-8,000 feet.
