Location: Whitman Mission National Historic Site is located in southeastern Washington, 7 miles west of Walla Walla on US 12.

Description: The mission of Marcus and Narcissa Whitman at Waiilatpu was an important way station in the early days of the Oregon Trail. The Whitmans labored to bring Christianity to the Cayuse, but deep cultural differences and a measles epidemic led to violence in which the Cayuse killed the Whitmans and 11 others.

Activities: Visitors can enjoy a self-guided walk, which provides a history of the site through numerous exhibits and the original building foundations. During the summer months ranger-led programs are held daily and cultural demonstrations are held on Saturdays and Sundays.

Operating Hours:
Open daily, except Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year's days.

History
:
Authorized as Whitman National Monument on June 29, 1936; changed to current designation on January 1, 1963.
