Location: The Whiskeytown Unit of the national recreation area is on CA 299 off I-5 near Redding, California.
Description: The Whiskeytown Unit, with its mountainous backcountry and large reservoir, provides a multitude of outdoor recreation opportunities as well as remains of buildings built during the Gold Rush.
Activities: With 36 miles of shoreline and 3,200 surface acres of water on Whiskeytown Lake, water-based activities are the main interest of most park visitors, including kayaking, swimming, fishing, scuba diving, sailing, and water skiing. Free ranger-guided kayak tours are offered during the summer months through Labor Day by reservation. The land area surrounding the lake and extending all the way to the top of 6209-foot Shasta Bally provides year-round opportunities for hiking, horseback riding, mountain biking, bird-watching, and wildlife viewing. The Historic District dates back to before the 1849 California Gold Rush era and includes opportunities for gold panning and self-guided walks.Operating

The park is open year round 24 hours a day.
History: Authorized on November 8, 1965; established on October 21, 1972. Of the three parts of the Whiskeytown-Shasta-Trinity National Recreation Area, the Whiskeytown Unit is the only unit administered by the National Park Service. The
Shasta and Trinity units are administered by the Forest Service.
