Size: 75,000 acres. Only 28 acres are federally owned; the remainder of the river corridor is nonfederal, with most land under private ownership.
Location: The Upper Delaware Scenic & Recreational River consists of 73.4 miles of the Delaware River between Hancock and Sparrow Bush, New York, along the Pennsylvania-New York border. Access routes for the southern portion of the river include NY 17, I-84, and US 6. For the northern portion, access routes include NY 17 and NY 191. NY 97 follows the entire New York shore of the river area.
Description: The longest free-flowing river in the Northeast includes riffles and Class I and II rapids between placid pools and eddies. This unit of the National Park Service is also home to John Roebling's Delaware Aqueduct, the oldest surviving wire suspension bridge in the United States; and the Zane Grey Museum, located at the one-time home of the American west novelist in Lackawaxen, PA.
Activities: Camping, hiking, horseback riding, swimming, boating, canoeing, kayaking, tubing, fishing, hunting, auto touring, guided tour of the Zane Grey Museum. Facilities include campgrounds (privately owned), rest rooms, cabin rental, lodging, groceries, restaurant/snacks, boat rental, boat ramp, visitor center, and exhibits.Hours of Operation: River use is permitted 24 hours a day, year-round, unless closed due to flooding or other hazardous conditions. Public river accesses are closed from 10pm to 5am. Most private liveries and campgrounds are open from mid-April through October and visitor services are usually provided between Memorial Day and Labor Day weekends, and on weekends through the fall foliage season in October.
