Size: 9 acres

Location: Salem Maritime National Historic Site is located on Derby St. in Salem, Massachusetts, 20 miles northeast of Boston. 

Description: Recalling the time when Salem traded in the East Indies and throughout the world, the site includes 18th- and 19th-century wharves, the Custom House, the bonded warehouse, the West India Goods Store, the 17th-century Narbonne-Hale House, and the home of 18th-century merchant E. H. Derby. Salem Maritime was the first national historic site established in the National Park System.

Activities: A good place to begin your visit is at the Visitor Center where you can view an orientation film. From there you can take part in ranger-led tours of historic structures, hike the half-mile length of Derby Wharf into Salem Harbor, and visit the 18th-century garden as well as neighboring attractions, such as the House of the Seven Gables and the Peabody Essex Museum. You can also walk through historic neighborhoods, such as the McIntire District, Salem Common, and the Derby Waterfront District; and drive the Early Settlement Trail, the Maritime Trail, and the Industrial Trail to other sites in the Essex National Heritage Area.

Operating Hours
: The site is open daily from 9 am to 5 pm; closed Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day, and New Year's Day.

History: Designated on March 17, 1938.
