Size: 45 acres

Location: Saint Croix Island International Historic Site is located on US 1, 6 miles south of Calais, Maine. Mainland access is by either by Route 9 from Bangor or US 1, the coastal route from Portland and points south. Access to the Saint Croix Island section of the park is by private boat only. 

Description: The only designated international historic site in the National Park Service is a monument to the beginning of the United States and Canada. The attempted French settlement of 1604, which led to the founding of New France, is commemorated on Saint Croix Island in the Saint Croix River on the Canadian border.

Activities: Visitors can take a short walk to the interpretive shelter looking onto the estuary and Saint Croix Island. The Canadian side of the Saint Croix River, opposite the island, includes a Parks Canada summer exhibit. 

Operating Hours: The historic site is open all year from dawn to dusk. During the winter, however, the panels and statues along the interpretive trail at the mainland site are covered to prevent damage.

History: Authorized as a national monument on June 8, 1949; redesignated on September 25, 1984.
