Size: 86 acres

Location: Puukohola Heiau National Historic Site is located on the northwestern coast of the island of Hawaii, 1 mile south of Kawaihae off HI 270. 

Description: Ruins of Puukohola Heiau ("Temple on the Hill of the Whale"), built by King Kamehameha the Great in 1790-1791 during his rise to power, are preserved.

Activities: Visitors can tour the heiau built by Kamehameha I and the site of John Young's homestead. Other activities include hiking, bird watching, and whale watching (winter and spring).  

Operating Hours
: The park is open on a year-round basis. 

History: Authorized on August 17, 1972.
