Size: 420 acres. 

Location: Hopewell Culture National Historical Park is located on the Kona Coast of the island of Hawaii. Take HI 11 to HI 160 and continue downhill 4 miles to park entrance.

Description: Until 1819, vanquished Hawaiian warriors, noncombatants, and kapu breakers could escape death by reaching this sacred ground. Park includes ancient house sites, royal fishponds, coconut groves, and spectacular shore scenery.

Activities: Visitors can enjoy hiking, swimming, fishing, scuba diving, snorkeling, and observing cultural demonstrations. A self-guided trail passes through the royal grounds and place of refuge (pu’uhonua). A historic trail along the coast near the park boundary affords views of a number archeological sites including temple sites (heiau), sledding tracks (holua), and old house sites (kahua), all reminders of the rich cultural history of Hawaii. During the winter months visitors can often spot green sea turtles or humpback whales.  

Operating Hours: Park and visitor center are open on a year-round basis.

History
: Authorized as City of Refuge National Historical Park on July 26, 1955; renamed on November 10, 1978.
