Length: 704 miles
Description: The Potomac Heritage National Scenic Trail recognizes and commemorates the unique mix of history and recreation along the Potomac River. Much is already in place: the 184-mile towpath of the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal in the District of Columbia and Maryland, the 18-mile Mount Vernon Trail in Virginia, the 22-mile Prince Georges County Potomac Heritage Trail On-Road Bicycling Route in Maryland, and the 75-mile Laurel Highlands Trail in Pennsylvania. The trail begins at the mouth of the Potomac River and follows both banks to the District of Columbia. For 184 miles it coincides with the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal Towpath, then turns north, ending at Conemaugh Gorge. Trail encompasses portions of Maryland, Virginia, Pennsylvania, and the District of Columbia and is a catalyst for local recreation and conservation projects.
Activities: Hiking, bicycling.History: Established on March 28, 1983.
