Size: 1,670 acres.

Location: Montezuma Castle National Monument is located 50 miles south of Flagstaff, Arizona, off I-17.

Description: Built in the 12th and 13th centuries by Sinagua farmers, this 5-story, 20-room cliff dwelling is one of the best preserved in the United States. Early settlers to the area assumed that the imposing structure was associated with the Aztec emperor Montezuma, but the structure was abandoned almost a century before Montezuma was born.

Activities: Visitors can walk along a 1/3-mile trail that includes wayside exhibits describing the cultural and natural history of the site. A diorama/audio program depicts the interior view of the cliff dwellings. Rangers are available on the trail and programs are presented when staffing permits.

Operating Hours: Open every day of the year, including Christmas Day. Winter hours: 8:00am to 5:00pm; Summer hours (May 30th through Labor Day): 8:00am to 6:00pm.

History
: Proclaimed on December 8, 1906.
