Location: Lake Mead National Recreation Area is located in southeastern Nevada and northwestern Arizona. Headquarters is in Boulder City, NV, 27 miles southeast of Las Vegas. There are 9 paved access roads into the national recreation area.
Description: Lake Mead, formed by Hoover Dam, and Lake Mohave, by Davis Dam, on the Colorado River and more than one million acres of surrounding desert and mountains comprise this first national recreation area established by an act of Congress. Nine developed areas on both lakes offer a wide range of accommodations and services year-round.

With Lakes Mead and Mohave as the central focus, visitors to Lake Mead NRA are able to enjoy a variety of water-based recreation activities in a rugged and picturesque setting. Lakes Mead and Mohave offer some of the country's best sport fishing. Boating and water-skiing are also favorite activities on the broad expanses of open water, along with kayaking and canoeing.
History: Administered under cooperative agreements with Bureau of Reclamation on October 13, 1936, and July 18, 1947. Name changed from Boulder Dam National Recreation Area on August 11, 1947. Established on October 8, 1964.
