Size: 1,758 acres

Location: Knife River Indian Villages National Historic Site is located one-half mile north of Stanton, North Dakota, and 60 miles north of Bismarck; accessible via US 83 and ND 200A. 

Description: Park preserves historic and archeological remnants of the culture and agricultural lifestyle of the Northern Plains Indians. More than 50 archeological sites suggest a possible 8,000 year span of inhabitation, ending with five centuries of Hidatsa earthlodge village occupation.

Activities: A good place to begin your trip is at the visitor center and museum, where you can watch a 15-minute orientation film that provides an aerial view of the earthlodge rings and tells the story of the Hidatsa people that lived there. You can also see a furnished Hidatsa earthlodge behind the Visitor Center as well as take self-guided walking tours of three historic village sites. The paths offer opportunities for bird watching, wildlife viewing, fishing, and picnicking. There are 11 miles of trails through natural areas and cultural sites. Winter activities include cross-country skiing on groomed trails. 

Operating Hours
: Summer hours are from 7:30am - 6:00pm (Memorial Day through Labor Day); winter hours are from 8:00am - 4:30pm. Closed on Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year's Day.

History: Authorized on October 26, 1974.
