Size: 1,869 acres.
Location: The Quincy Unit of the park is located just north of Hancock, Michigan, along US 41. The Calumet Unit is located in and around the Village of Calumet, Michigan, 8 miles north of the Quincy Unit on US 41.
Description: Park was established to commemorate the rich history of copper mining on the Keweenaw Peninsula of Michigan -- the only place in the world where commercially abundant quantities of elemental copper occurred. It has the oldest metal mining heritage in the western hemisphere, dating back 7,000 years, and was the site of America's first large-scale, hard-rock industrial mining operations.
Activities: A number of governmentally and privately-operated attractions, which are cooperating with the National Park Service, can be visited now. These include Quincy Mine Host and Underground Tours, Fort Wilkins State Park, Keweenaw County Historical Museum, Houghton County Historical Museum, Seaman Mineral Museum, and Delaware Copper Mine.Operating Hours: Summer and early Fall are the primary seasons for visiting the Keweenaw Peninsula, particularly from Memorial Day to the end of the Fall color season in mid October. Winter activities such as snowmobiling, cross-country skiing, snowshoeing and ice fishing are popular from late November through the end of March. During the Summer and early Fall, the National Park Service operates a visitor information desk at the Quincy Mine Hoist Association Gift Shop located along U.S. Highway 41. Most visitor services for Keweenaw National Historical Park are provided through the park's seventeen cooperating sites. Hours and days of operation at the cooperating sites vary with the season. Most of the cooperating sites close for the winter by late October. Check with the Keweenaw Convention and Visitors Bureau at 888-646-6784 for specific details.
History: Established on October 27, 1992.
