Size: 22.5 acres
Location: Jamestown National Historic Site is located on the western end of Jamestown Island, Virginia, 7 miles from Colonial Williamsburg, off the Colonial Parkway.
Description: Part of this site of the first permanent English settlement in North America (1607) is on the upper end of Jamestown Island, scene of the first representative legislative government on this continent, July 30, 1619.
Activities: The Association for the Preservation of Virginia Antiquities' Jamestown Rediscovery Project displays artifacts recovered during the search for the 1607 triangular fort. Volunteer guides provide information on the current status of the excavation of James Fort. Guided tours of the Memorial Church are also available April through October.Operating
Hours: All park grounds are closed at sunset. The Jamestown Entrance Station
and the Visitor Information Station are open daily. Historic "Jamestowne" is closed December 25 and January 1.
History: In 1893 the owners of the Island, Mr. and Mrs. Edward E. Barney, donated this plot of land to the Association for the Preservation of Virginia Antiquities
(APVA). In 1934 the rest of the 1500 acres of Jamestown Island were acquired by the National Park Service as part
of Colonial National Historical Park.
Since that time the National Park Service and APVA have jointly administered Historic
Jamestowne.
