Size: 785 acres.
Location: Hovenweep National Monument is located in southeastern Utah and southwestern Colorado. The only paved entrance road is UT 262, which runs east from US 191, 15 miles south of Blanding. Also accessible from Cortez, Colorado.
Description: Pre-Columbian Indians built these 6 groups of towers, pueblos, and cliff dwellings. The first reports of these structures were made by W.D. Huntington, the leader of a Mormon expedition into southeastern Utah in 1854.
Activities: Visitors can enjoy short hikes, natural quiet and some of the finest examples of ancestral Puebloan architecture in the southwest. The trail system provides access to each of the cultural site units. All units are open to the public but most are in remote locations and can be difficult to reach. The Square Tower Group is an ideal place to begin your exploration of Hovenweep. Stop by the visitor center, attend an interpretive program, and be sure to hike all or part of the two-mile self-guiding trail around Little Ruin Canyon.
Operating
Hours: Hovenweep is open year-round. The visitor center is open daily from
8:00 am - 5:00pm, with extended hours during the summer. The visitor center is
closed winter holidays. Hiking trails are open during daylight hours.
History:
Proclaimed on March 2, 1923.
