Size: 2,501 acres. 

Location: Harpers Ferry National Historic Park is located along US 340, 65 miles west of Washington, DC, and Baltimore, Maryland. The site encompasses portions of Maryland, Virginia, and West Virginia. 

Description: Because of its strategic location at the confluence of the Shenandoah and Potomac rivers, this town changed hands eight times during the Civil War. John Brown's raid took place here in 1859.

Activities: Visitors to the park can enjoy various museums and exhibits, guided programs (seasonally), hiking, fishing, rock climbing and rappelling.

Operating Hours: Daily, summer: 8am to 6pm; daily, winter: 8am to 5pm; closed Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year's Day

History

Authorized as a national monument on June 30, 1944; changed to national historical park on May 29, 1963.
