Size: 4,351 acres.

Location: Hagerman Fossil Beds National Monument is located in south-central Idaho near the town of Hagerman, off US 30.

Description: Site protects the world's richest known fossil deposits from the late Pliocene epoch, 3.5 million years ago. These plants and animals represent the last glimpse of time that existed before the Ice Age, and the earliest appearances of modern flora and fauna. The fossils, which are embedded in the banks of the Snake River, have been exposed by the carving action of the river. Planning is underway to provide for continuing paleontological research and to provide for the display and interpretation of fossil specimens.
