Size: 26,607 acres
Location: Gauley River National Recreation Area is located off US 19 between Summersville and Fayetteville, West Virginia.
Description: The 25 miles of free-flowing Gauley River and the 6 miles of the Meadow River pass through scenic gorges and valleys containing a wide variety of natural and cultural features. The Gauley River contains several Class V+ rapids, making it one of the most adventurous whitewater boating rivers in the eastern United States.
Activities: Thousands of whitewater enthusiasts come to the Gauley every fall season, to paddle what is considered by many to be the one of the best whitewater rivers in the country. Other activities include camping, hiking, and fishing.
Operating
Hours: The area is open year round. The official Gauley boating season is
from early September through mid October. Boating is occasionally possible at
other times, depending on water releases from Summersville Dam.
History: Authorized on October 26, 1988.
