Size: 26,607 acres

Location: Gateway National Recreation Area extends through three New York City boroughs (Breezy Point Unit, Jamaica Bay Unit, and Staten Island Unit) and into northern New Jersey (Sandy Hook Unit). 

Description: With beaches, marshes, islands, and adjacent waters in the New York harbor area, this park offers urban residents a wide range of recreational opportunities. The Sandy Hook Unit, in New Jersey, features beaches, plant and animal life, and historic structures, including Sandy Hook Lighthouse (1764), the oldest operational light in the United States.

Activities: Camping, hiking, bicycling, horseback riding, birdwatching, swimming, boating, fishing, auto touring, organized athletics, ranger-led programs.

Operating Hours: Park sites are open all year from sunrise to sunset. Most areas have extended hours during the summer season. Permits for certain after-hours activities are also available.

History: Established on October 27, 1972.
