Location: Frederick Douglass National Historic Site is located on W Street in Washington, DC.

Description: From 1877 to 1895, this was the home of the Nation's leading 19th-century black spokesman. Among other achievements, he was the U.S. minister to Haiti in 1889.

Activities: Viewing the 17-minute film entitled Frederick Douglass: Fighter for Freedom, and the exhibits in the Visitor Center are a good place to begin your visit to the park. Ranger-led tours of the Frederick Douglass home provide detailed information about the last 18 years of Mr. Douglass' life (1877-1895) when he lived there. Reservations for groups of five or more are required for the tour of the home. Smaller groups and individuals are encouraged to make reservations online or by calling 1-800-967-2283. All house tours begin in the visitor center.

Operating Hours: Open 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. daily, mid-October through mid-April, and 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. daily, mid-April through mid-October. The last house tour departs 30 minutes before closing time. The site is closed on January 1, Thanksgiving, and December 25.

History: Authorized on September 5, 1962, as Frederick Douglass Home; redesignated on February 12, 1988.
