Size: 8,198 acres

Location: Fossil Butte National Monument is located in southwestern Wyoming, near the intersection of US 189 and US 30. 

Description: This 50-million-year-old lake bed is one of the richest fossil localities in the world. The most noteworthy record of freshwater fossil fish ever found in the United States is preserved here. Fossil insects, snails, turtles, birds, bats, and plant remains are also found in the 50-million-year-old rock layers. Today, Fossil Butte is a semi-arid landscape of flat-topped buttes and ridges dominated by sagebrush, other desert shrubs, and grasses.

Activities: Plan 45 minutes to an hour at the visitor center to view the exhibits and watch the videos. Allow 1 hour to hike the Fossil Lake Trail and 2-3 hours for the Historic Quarry Trail.

Operating Hours: June-August, Visitor Center hours 8:00am-7:00pm; Winter Visitor Center hours 8-4:30 (September through May). Closed winter Holidays.

History: Established on October 23, 1972.
