Size: 300 acres
Location: Fort Matanzas National Monument is located 14 miles south of Saint Augustine, Florida, accessible via FL A1A on Anastasia Island.
Description: Matanzas Inlet was the scene of crucial events in Spanish colonial history. The massacre of French soldiers here in 1565 was Spain's opening move in establishing a colony in Florida. The construction of Fort Matanzas in 1740-1742 was Spain's last effort to ward off British encroachments on Saint Augustine.

Operating
Hours: Fort Matanzas National Monument is open to the public from 9:00 am to
5:30 pm every day of the year except December 25. The number of visitors is
highest March through Labor Day and during the December holidays. Visitation is
at its lowest from the middle of September through mid-November. The park is
busiest on holiday weekends throughout the year, when there may be a wait to
take the ferry.
History:
Proclaimed on October 15, 1924; transferred from War Department on August 10, 1933.
