Size: 718 acres
Location: Fort Larned National Historic Site is located 6 miles west of the city of Larned, Kansas, on KS 156.
Description: This military outpost was established midway along the Santa Fe Trail in 1859 to protect the mail and travelers. The fort served as a bureau for the Indian Agency during much of the 1860s and was a key military base of operations during the Indian War of 1868-1869. The fort was deactivated in 1878 and sold at public auction in 1884. The stone buildings are among the best preserved vestiges of the Indian Wars era.
Activities: When available, living historians staff the infantry barracks, post blacksmith shop, hospital, blockhouse, commissary and officers quarters. During the summer season, there are demonstrations providing a more detailed look at life in the 1860s. Other special activities are scheduled from April to December.Operating Hours: May 30th-Sept 3rd, 8:00am. to 6:00pm. The remainder of the year 8:30am to 5:00pm. Closed Thanksgiving Day, Christmas and New Years Day.
History: Authorized on August 31, 1964; established on October 14, 1966.
