Size: 999 acres
Location: Fort Bowie National Historic Site is located in southeastern Arizona, 116 miles east of Tucson. From Wilcox (on I-10), go 22 miles south on AZ 186 and then onto dirt road leading east into Apache Pass; from Bowie (on I-10), drive south 12 miles to Apache Pass.
Description: Established in 1862, this fort was the focal point of military operations against Geronimo and his band of Apaches. The site also preserves part of the Butterfield Overland Mail Route. The ruins can be reached only by trail.

Hours: Visitor Center: 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., daily. Closed Christmas Day.
Ruins Trail hours are from sunrise to sunset. Peak season is from March until
May.
History: Authorized on August 30, 1964; established on July 29, 1972.
