Size: 5,998 acres

Location: Florissant Fossil Beds National Monument is located 35 miles west of Colorado Springs, Colorado. From north/south on I-25, take US 24 west 35 miles to town of Florissant, then follow signs 2 miles south to the visitor center. 

Description: A wealth of fossil insects, seeds, and leaves of the Oligocene Period are preserved here in remarkable detail. Here, too, is an unusual display of standing petrified sequoia stumps.

Activities: During the summer months, 20-minute orientation talks and a one-hour Petrified Forest walk is offered on a daily basis. Junior Ranger programs are offered on weekends. Other summer activities include seminars, discovery programs, and Hornbek Homestead Days. Activities permitted year-round include hiking along self-guided trails.

Operating Hours: The visitor center hours are May 1 - September 30 from 9:00am - 5:30pm; and the rest of the year from 8:00am - 4:30pm.
