Size: 41,972 acres

Location: The Curecanti National Recreation Area is located in west-central Colorado, accessible via US 50, which runs the length of the recreation area between Montrose and Gunnison (200 miles southwest of Denver). 

Description: Three lakes -- Blue Mesa, Morrow Point, and Crystal -- extend for 40 miles along the Gunnison River. When full, Blue Mesa Lake, with a surface area of 14 square miles, is the largest lake in Colorado. Morrow Point Lake is the beginning of the Black Canyon of the Gunnison and below, Crystal Lake is the site of the Gunnison Diversion Tunnel, a National Historic Civil Engineering Landmark.

Activities: Activities at Curecanti include auto touring, boating, camping, hiking, fishing, horseback riding, wildlife viewing, and interpretive programs. Winter activities include ice fishing, ice skating, snowmobiling and cross country skiing. Recently discovered dinosaur fossils, a 5,000 acre archeological district, a narrow gauge train, and traces of 6000 year old dwellings further enhance the offerings of Curecanti.

Operating Hours:
The park is open every day of the year. Visitor centers are open daily, mid-May through the end of September.


History:
Administered under cooperative agreement with Bureau of Reclamation since February 11, 1965.
