Visitation: 285,710 (2003)

Location: Bandelier National Monument is located 48 miles (by road) northwest of Santa Fe, New Mexico. From Santa Fe, travel north on 285/84 to Pojoaque, then west on NM 502 and south on NM 4. From Albuquerque take I-25 north to NM 44 to NM 4.

Description: On the canyon-slashed slopes of the Pajarito Plateau are the ruins of many cliff houses and villages of 13th-century Pueblo Indians.

Activities: For most visitors, the first activity at Bandelier National Monument is walking the Main Loop Trail, which starts at the Visitor Center and leads through excavated archeological sites. Other trails vary from short and easy to long and strenuous, and invite day hikes, backpacking, birdwatching, and just general enjoyment of the surroundings. Regularly scheduled guided walks, evening programs, interpretive talks, and craft demonstrations are held during the summer months. Self-guided trails are available year round. 

Operating Hours: Bandelier National Monument is open daily. Summer: Visitor Center, 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.; Winter: Visitor Center, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.; Spring/Fall: Visitor Center, 9:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.; Frijoles Canyon and Tsankawi: dawn to dusk. Closed December 25, January 1.

History

Proclaimed on February 11, 1916; transferred from Forest Service on February 25, 1932. Wilderness designated on October 20, 1976.
