Andersonville National Historic Site is located 10 miles north of Americus, Georgia, on GA 49.

Description:

Andersonville, or Camp Sumter as it was officially known, was one of the largest of many Confederate military prisons established during the Civil War. During the 14 months of its existence (1864-1865), more than 45,000 Union soldiers were confined here, of which nearly 13,000 died from disease, poor sanitation, malnutrition, overcrowding, or exposure to the elements. Today, Andersonville is the only park in the National Park System to serve as a memorial to all American prisoners of war throughout the nation's history. Site includes Andersonville National Cemetery which has 16,000 interments (1,004 unidentified).

Things to Do at Andersonville National Historic Site:

Begin your visit in the National Prisoner of War Museum. A 27-minute audio-visual program entitled "Echoes of Captivity" provides an orientation to the overall prisoner of war story. Walking and/or driving through the National Cemetery and prison site are recommended. An audio driving tour is available for a $1.00 rental fee. A picnic area is located within the park. Interpretive Programs are presented at the historic prison site daily at 11:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. Additional information can be obtained at the National Prisoner of War Museum information desk.

A primitive campsite is available at no charge to organized educational and youth groups only. Reservations for the campsite should be made at least two weeks in advance.

Operating Hours:

Park grounds, including the historic prison site and the National Cemetery, are open 365-days a year from 8:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. The National Prisoner of War Museum is open daily from 8:30 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. except for the following holidays: Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day (December 25th) and New Years Day (January 1st).

History:

Andersonville National Historic Site was authorized on October 16, 1970.
