Location: Allegheny Portage Railroad National Historic Site is located on US 22, Gallitzin Exit, 12 miles west of Altoona in southwestern Pennsylvania.
Description: Site preserves traces of the first railroad crossing of the Allegheny Mountains. Built between 1831-1834, the inclined plane railroad permitted transportation of passengers and freight over the mountains from 1834-1854, providing a critical link in the Pennsylvania Mainline Canal system and an important role in opening the interior of the United States to trade and settlement.

Getting there:
The Allegheny Portage Railroad National Historic Site
is located just off U.S. 22 approximately 12
miles west of Altoona and 10 miles east of Ebensburg. Take the Gallitzin Exit
and follow the signs.
Public Transportation: Amtrak stops in
Johnstown and Altoona. There is no public transportation to or within the park.
Operating Hours:
Open 7 days a week year-round, closed Veterans Day
(November 11), Thanksgiving Day, December 25, and January 1, Martin Luther King
Jr. Day (3rd Monday in January), Presidents Day (3rd Monday in February).
History: Authorized on August 31, 1964.
