The Confederate cavalry was employed with extraordinary skill
here during the battle of June 10, 1864.
Located in both Florida and Mississippi, the offshore islands
feature beaches, historic forts, and nature trails.
Interprets the history of Natchez, Mississippi, a commercial,
cultural, and social center of the "cotton belt"
and antebellum South.
Parallels the Natchez Trace Parkway, which commemorates the
original Natchez Trace, an ancient path that began as a
series of animal tracks and Native American trails.
Historic route generally follows the old Indian trace, or
trail, between Nashville, Tennessee, and Natchez,
Mississippi.
Lieutenant General Nathan Bedford Forrest tried to cut the
railroad supplying the Unions march on Atlanta here on July
13-14, 1864.
Commemorates one of the most decisive battles of the Civil
War -- the campaign, siege and defense of Vicksburg -- from
March 29 to July 4, 1863.
