A few quick facts: Mammoth Cave is one of the oldest tourist attractions in North America. Tours of Mammoth Cave have been offered since 1816. The National Park was established on July 1, 1941. It was designated a World Heritage Site in 1981 and an International Biosphere Reserve in 1990. The park was established to preserve the cave system, including Mammoth Cave, the scenic river valleys of the Green and Nolin rivers, and a section of south central Kentucky. The park includes the longest recorded cave system in the world with more than 336 miles explored and mapped. The 52,830-acre park receives approximately 1.7 million visitors per year.
