1864
Confederate General Nathan Bedford Forrest Battle scores a decisive victory over General S.D. Sturgis' Union forces when they meet at Brices Cross Roads. Although the battle was considered a major tactical victory and the Union lost five men to every Southern casualty, it did not diminish the effectiveness of Sherman's Atlanta campaign. Today, the Brices Cross Roads National Historic Site, a one-acre site in Baldwyn, MS commemorates the battle.

1933
President Franklin D. Roosevelt signs Executive Order 6166, culminating a campaign to consolidate the administration of all federal parks and monuments that had begun in the first decades of the 20th century. The Antiquities Act of 1906 had left administration of the national monuments divided among the Departments of Interior, War, and Agriculture.
