1789
George Washington, the nation's first president, takes his oath of office and delivers his first inaugural address to a joint session of Congress, assembled in Federal Hall in the nation's new capital, New York City. Today, the site is preserved as Federal Hall National Memorial, a unit of the National Park Service.
