Frederick Law Olmsted, perhaps America's best known landscape architect and planner, is born in Hartford Connecticut. A national historic site in his honor was established in Brookline, MA, in 1979 to preserve “Fairsted,” the world's first full-scale professional office for the practice of landscape design.

1897
The General Grant National Memorial is dedicated in New York City on the birthday of the 17th US President and victorious Union commander of the Civil War. Grant's accomplishments include signing the act establishing the first national park, Yellowstone, on March 1, 1872.
