Channel Islands is proclaimed a national monument. In 1980, it would be elevated to the status of national park. Comprised of five in a chain of eight southern California islands near Los Angeles, the 249,354-acre park is home more than 2,000 species of plants and animals, including 145 species that are unique to the islands and found nowhere else in the world.
