President John Adams approves the appropriation of $5,000 for the purchase of "such books as may be necessary for the use of congress," thereby establishing the Library of Congress. Today, the Library preserves a collection of nearly 121 million items. 

The Adams National Historic Site in Quincy, MA, preserves 11 historic structures including John Adams Birthplace, where second United States President John Adams was born in 1735, and the "Old House," home to four generations of the Adams family.
