1908
Natural Bridges, which  protects some of the finest examples of ancient stone architecture in the southwest, is proclaimed as a national monument, making it the oldest National Park Service site in Utah.
1967
David Brower, Director of Sierra Club, publishes full page ads in national newspapers to alert the public of the government plans to build dams that would have backed up water into the Grand Canyon. Subsequent public outcry doomed the dams.

After serving as executive director of the Sierra Club (1952-1969), Mr. Brower goes on to establish Friends of the Earth in 1969 and the Earth Island Institute in 1982. These organizations are helping to protect nature, save species threatened by extinction, and fight pollution by linking environmental issues with global social and political issues.
