APRIL 6

1862
The first major battle in the Western theater of the Civil War is fought in Shiloh, Tennessee, on April 6-7. The Battle of Shiloh brought together about 65,000 Union troops led by General Ulysses S. Grant and 44,000 Confederate troops led by General. A.S. Johnston. The two-day battle resulted in nearly 24,000 killed, wounded, and missing. It proved to be a decisive victory for the Federal forces who subsequently advanced on and seized control of the Confederate railway system at Corinth, Mississippi.

Shiloh National Military Park was established in 1894 to preserve the scene of the battle. Today, the 3,973-acre park includes the Shiloh National Cemetery along with the well preserved prehistoric Indian mounds that are listed as a historic landmark.
