After being authorized by President Herbert Hoover in March of 1931, Michigan's Isle Royale National Park is finally established nine years later by President Franklin D. Roosevelt. The park would be designated part of the National Wilderness Preservation System in 1976 and then an International Biosphere Reserve in 1980.

Today, this roadless, wilderness park protects a total area of 850 square miles of crystal clear waters and rugged shoreline of Lake Superior, including historic lighthouses and shipwrecks, ancient copper mining sites, and plenty of spots to observe wildlife.
